Marines See Troop Cuts As Chance To Improve Quality
Marine leaders welcome planned reductions, saying a smaller force allows selective intake and retention. A target of about 200000 men could sustain three divisions with air wings, aiding readiness. Peak strength reached 315000 in March, with 234000 projected by mid 1971 and 220000 by 1972 if trends continue.
