Moral Promise Not Enforceable In Court Says Judge

A dying man asked Harold to watch over his wife’s affairs, promising to aid her after his death. Harold later refused, prompting a suit for breaking the promise. The court ruled the promise was nonbinding moral obligation only, unless backed by an additional legal duty. In a related case, a furniture maker could compel payment when a later apology promise arose from an original legal obligation, despite the earlier statute of limitations.

Market Rally Drives Stocks To Record-Heavy Session

New York AP reports the stock market set a record for most issues traded in one session as the rally extended for a second straight day. The Dow closed at 789.86, up 6.07, amid gains in motors, rubber, farm implements, electronics, utilities, metals, rails, oils, and drugs, with losses in steels, aircraft, chemicals, airlines, and tobaccos. Officials cited Burns remarks on monetary policy and tax reform as investor catalysts while tax-loss selling tempered buying later in the day.
