McNamara warns China may have nuke stockpile by 1975

Paris AP defense secretary Robert McNamara told NATO ministers that Red China could possess a small stockpile of nuclear weapons within two years and may deploy intercontinental ballistic missiles by 1975. He urged Europe to plan to meet this threat within five years while affirming U.S. resolve to defend Western Europe and keep commitments in NATO without redeploying major units from Europe to Vietnam. He warned of bases for guerrilla warfare in Asia, Africa and Latin America if China advances. France challenged NATO nuclear-sharing plans, seeking limits on multilateral discussion and a permanent voice for West Germany in nuclear strategy.
