Taxpayers Association predicts $10 tax rate rise in Dalton

Dalton Taxpayers Association president Harold F Burnes told 12 members at a Friday meeting that the town's tax rate for next year will rise at least $10. He cited higher school costs and proposed town employee salary increases as causes and noted the Finance Committee is pushing cost controls with Selectmen. He commented on the 9 percent town employee pay proposal as not overly generous compared with outside rates and discussed government form changes, suggesting a town manager model might yield better value. The group planned inviting Finance Committee chair Albert Reinhardt Jr to speak in January to discuss the budget and potential government changes, and considered inviting the School Committee. A debate arose over unsafe wiring at the Opera House, and a proposal to replace the building with a new site for town offices. A plan to erect a red brick central building on the old Crane Inn site was suggested, and a letter to the town treasurer was agreed to inquire about noninterest bearing funds and possible better investments.

Dr. Ronald F. Stinnett of the Washington Group Inc will present to the City Council tomorrow a financial plan allowing North Adams to build a civic government center. Mayor Cleary favors a downtown city hall complex by a library and high school but a Technical Planning Associates study says downtown costs are too high and suggests a Trudeau Farm site high school instead. The Washington Group would oversee construction and include a retail area, with store rent helping cover costs. It remains unclear if a downtown high school is part of the Washington Group plan.
