Battle Near Da Nang Deepens As Reinforcements Arrive
North Vietnamese reinforcements moved toward the Da Nang area Friday as a major battle, ongoing since Sunday, raged 31 miles south of the city. More than 1,000 enemy troops faced 1,200 U S and South Vietnamese soldiers with at least 35 to 40 Americans killed and over 160 wounded by Friday night. The clash north of the Hiep Duc refugee center aimed to reach a downed American helicopter with eight aboard. The fight involved heavy artillery, fighter bombers, and entrenched bunkers on Hill 102 and surrounding positions. A patrol attempted to outflank the enemy, but sustained fire from machine guns halted the advance. Lieutenant Cal Eli P. Howard Jr. of Woodbridge, Virginia, an AP photographer, was aboard the downed chopper. Refugees center at Nihiep Duc remains a focal point amid the battle.

U.S. advisers note bribery, favoritism, and family ties skew outcomes while the process lacks full due process and turns on provincial security councils.
