Attendance and Programs at Berkshire Festival and Boston Symphony

Tomorrow groundskeepers tend lawns at Tanglewood as Berkshire Festival logs its 28th season and musical historians study events and achievements of summer. Attendance figures are unreliable due to weather, but the festival remains a strong cultural magnet and the Boston Symphony Orchestra again anchors a season shaped by programs, soloists, and support for contemporary and neglected composers.

Musical festival programs and audience demand clash at Tanglewood

A veteran observer laments festival inflexibility and gaps in repertoire inclining toward admired idols. He notes limited program choices, scarce English and American works, and reliance on standards like La Mer while praising the Berkshire Center and Tanglewood’s global reach. The piece highlights Lohen Grin in concert form as a season hallmark and ponders Box Office versus Musical Direction in symphonic authority.

Bridge blunders gift opponents chances to win big

Bridge players trade risky lines as South enters the lead with queen of diamonds and after a sequence of returns and ruffs, East gains the lead. South ruffs in dummy and attempts another diamond, but East wins the sack and then cashes a trump. South faces a tough position as the play unfolds.

Don't Give Opponents Chance To Beat You

Bridge commentary describes a hand where South's ruffing and diamond play lead to a loss of contract. The dealer considers opening bids with 13 points, arguing the queen of diamonds is devalued and that better pass remedies would avoid declaring the contract.
