VA Hospitals Cite Evidence Of Therapy
VA hospitals treat twice as many mentally ill veterans as 15 years ago but lack bed growth. New therapies and cooperative psychiatry studies aid treatment with tranquilizers and energizers. In 1949 some 55,000 psychiatric patients were cared for. 1965 projections showed 122,009, while current totals run about 70,000 below that. Rehabilitation, pre and post hospital care, and efficiency improvements help double bed capacity.
