Willing Workers met at Mrs. Joseph Cameron’s home and announced about $320 net from the recent supper. A clothing demonstration party is planned at the church in October. The September meeting will be at Mrs. Olive Rathbun’s home.
In Chicago, police boosted staffing to 200 plus on 12 hour shifts and 2,000 Illinois National Guardsmen stood by as 85 Negro detectives patrolled West Side streets. A show of force and early dispersal kept Sabbath calm after Thursday Friday rioting with 28 arrests for loitering. No injuries were reported despite occasional bottles thrown from roofs.
Automobile manufacturers defended new car tires as safe if inflation guidance is followed, urging mandatory inspections and opposing a bill for uniform tire safety standards. Spokesmen from GM, Ford, Chrysler, and others argued worn or damaged tires pose the real danger, while asserting current tires are proper size and safe for loaded vehicles.
In Washington, New England members’ roll call records show on passage of a cabinet housing bill 57 to 33 with several named supporters from Vermont Massachusetts New Hampshire and Maine. In the public works and redevelopment bill the administration measure passed 245 to 138 with many New England Democrats and Republicans voting yes and a few not voting.
The Massachusetts Probate Court issues citations in Berkshire County notices for will probate and administration. Objections must be filed in Pittsfield by specified August dates 1965 and 1945 with appearances in court. Attorneys F Anthony Hanton and F Anthony Hadlon sign as judges.
A three judge court certified Dr. W Ferguson Reid a Richmond physician as a Democratic nominee for the Virginia Legislature after a recount of the July 13 primary. Reid, backed by white leaders, trailed by 11 votes but the recount gave him 14 460 to 14 464 for the eighth place in the 12 man field for the House of Delegates district covering Richmond and Henrico County.
Notice announces a public auction at 11 a.m. on the Sunday in September 1965 to foreclose the mortgage held by The Pittsfield Cooperative Bank on a Pittsfield property described in Book 747, Page 9h&c. The sale, held at 184 North Street, Pittsfield, requires a $3500 cash deposit with balance due within ten days after decree. The proceeding includes other court actions and notices under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act of 1940.
