Park land for school site faces tougher path in city
City Solicitor Edwin Reder ruled that taking part of Springside Park for a school site may proceed only if the Park Commission finds the land unnecessary for playground use and the City Council by a two thirds vote, with the mayor's approval, transfers the property. With seven of 11 council members supported a Victory Hill school plan, broad agreement seems unlikely, and state legislation could delay action. The Park Commission has asked the Council to specify sought park land and will act once it responds. Mayor Dillon warned of legal snags and urged the Council to consider alternative sites if the High School Committee’s Williams Street O Brien property plan is not accepted.
