Lee Bypass Debate Highlights Laurel Street Tangle

About 20 residents attended an informal hearing on a Route 20 bypass through Lee, with broad support but strong disagreement on how Laurel Street fits in. Proposals favor a limited access road from Laurel Street foot to Housatonic Street north of the Turnpike, mainly along the river, funded by the state. Critics fear Laurel Street cannot handle traffic and may slow heavy vehicles. others urge widening and extending Laurel Street and integrating Route 102 commercial expansion. The group urged three-area study groups and renewed DPW pressure for a firm commitment, while a Lenox chamber official warned bypasses can harm town vitality.
