Sierra Club Opposes Oil Refinery in Machiasport Maine
The Eastern New England Sierra Club voted to oppose a proposed Machiasport refinery after a six month study concluded oil pollution is likely, development controls are lacking, and cheaper fuel options exist. Proponents cite potential heating oil savings, with Maine backing a site near jumbo tanker traffic and a bay prone to storms. The report warns of a large spill threatening Georges Bank and broad eastern coast fisheries.
