AP dispatch from Saigon reports US air losses stay near pre lull levels with 7 helicopters and 3 fixed wing crafts shot down last week and 12 more helicopters and 5 planes lost to shelling accidents or failures. American battlefield deaths drop 4 percent to 110. total US aircraft destroyed reach 5690 in eight years.
Washington AP United Airlines asks CAB to raise domestic fares by about 6.6 percent and hints other major carriers will file similar increases. Pan American proposes cuts up to 23 percent with a new Great Circle NY Tokyo route via Fairbanks. Trans World Airlines plans a rise, TWA not stating amount. United argues earnings decline warrants higher revenue for the industry.
Pope Paul VI urged international mediation to end the Nigeria Biafra war during his Uganda visit. He met with Nigerian and Biafran delegates, offered to host talks, and announced Vatican support for two Nigerian hospitals to aid children harmed by the conflict. The pontiff acknowledged limited success so far and pledged persistent, non political efforts toward peace.
President Nixon wrapped up an Asian tour with opposing views on resuming U S military shipments to South Asia. In New Delhi he met Indira Gandhi, in Pakistan with Yahya Khan, while Washington weighs lifting the arms embargo amid strategic shifts with China and Vietnam.
A 22 year old Eastern Michigan University student, Joan Norman Collins, is charged with the murder of Karen Beineman amid a string of eight killings of young women in two years. Investigators seek links to six other cases while Collins is held without bond after a pretrial hearing.
In Leningrad the head of the Sverdloy Machine Tools Combine, Georgy A. Kulagin, warns that Soviet society’s push for higher education has reduced blue collar labor. He notes rural youth favor education over factory work, and that housing shortages and better countryside living pull workers back home. He questions whether too many engineers are being prepared as 80 percent of engineering work does not require a degree. Also, Nicolae Ceausescu tells visiting Americans capitalism must yield to socialism worldwide, underscoring his continued Communist stance.
