US Economy Needs New Ideas, Speaker Asserts
GREAT BARRINGTON The U S economy needs many new ideas driven by research, especially in housing and autos, Herbert Jones of New York Hansealie Corp told the Great Barrington Rotary Club. He warned of foreign competition draining markets and cited car and electronics imports as urging shifts in production and marketing. Jones noted a $15 billion reserve and recent tax moves on foreign holdings, questioned if a broad tax cut would boost American spending, and urged local focus on higher taxes and costs limiting investment. He predicted recreation will grow in importance and cited Butternut Basin Ski Area as a regional stimulus to consumer spending.
