New York City Sets Noise Standard for Ice Cream Bells
The New York Department of Markets held an audition for ice cream vendors on White Street to set a customer friendly noise level. Commissioner Pacetta imposed a 9 p.m. curfew and tested bells with a sound device from WNYC, selecting a decibel rating of minus four as the standard. Operators with louder bells were ordered to lower the volume.
