Callahan’s Rise From City Office to Turnpike Authority
Calahan known as a doer moved from Nashua Street to head the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in 1952 after Gov. Dever’s defeat. He oversaw the Weston to State Line Turnpike, the Boston harbor tunnel to East Boston, and the Sumner Tunnel. The authority expanded the Turnpike into downtown Boston and pursued air rights to lease built-over structures. Despite innuendo and a 1960 federal probe, no evidence tied Callahan to the kickback claims.
