Beethoven and the Social Security of Genius
A vivid meditation on Beethoven’s life and work, arguing that genius is shaped through method and memory rather than sudden inspiration. It parodies bureaucratic questions about employment status while tracing how memo books, sketches, and iterative refinement reveal a creator’s process and the myth of seamless inspiration.

Stockbridge grad signs seven year film contract
New York AP reports 21 year old Stockbridge School graduate Rosemary Forsyth from Interlaken, a former honor student active in dramatics, has signed a seven year contract with Universal Studio after a film test impressed producer Walter Seltzer. Forsyth, born in Montreal, pursued modeling before acting, frames Hollywood as a chance not a destiny, and likens herself to Cinderella only in gratitude, not aspiration. She stands 5 feet 9, with long hair and strong cheekbones, and aims to balance ambition with realism while envisioning a long career in film.

Bridge Confession and a Trick Gone Wrong
A reader recalls a dinner with a mother-in-law claimed as a business expense and jokes about confessing to the IRS. The bridge hand then demonstrates a moral about truth and deception, noting that prejudice against falsehood can cost a trick as East wins the ace of clubs and diamond play forces a restricted trump loss. South leads a heart to dummy.

Truth and Taxes and Trick Taking in One Card Story
A fragment from a bridge column blends card play analysis with tax honesty. South must decide on a spade lead and whether West can force a misplay, while a quip ties the game to telling the truth to the IRS. The piece also notes Laurence Harvey ahead of Life at the Top.
