Opening of Massachusetts fishing season predicted bright
Berkshire County reports calm streams and well stacked waters though snow lingers in the hills. Official opening is an hour before sunrise at 4 69 a.m. Preseason stocking totals reach 43 250 brook, brown and rainbow trout by Western Wildlife District plus 10 600 trout from the U S Fish and Wildlife Service. Stocking compares favorably with last year though larger trout are fewer.

Tomorrow the Division of Fisheries and Game distributes centennial tags at Westboro HQ for anglers who return them. State hatcheries report bigger trout this year due to mild winter, with ice conditions easing on several lakes though Quabbin remains partially icebound. Restrictions ease near the pumping station at Quabbin, and motorboats face limits. Gene Moran promotes 1000 Acre Swamp in New Marlborough as a fishing spot, though access is tough. Dalton Red and Gun Club hosts its 75th banquet, while Orvis offers a free fishing catalog. A 31‑pound dolphin win is possible if first strike had occurred, and the Willoughby River rainbow run opens. The Vermont trout season starts April 24.

Threats from China Won't Deter the President
An editorial argues that Chinese and North Vietnamese threats aim to deter U S action in Vietnam. It asserts the United States will not halt or delay troop deployments and that Beijing and Hanoi seek a Dien Bien Phu style outcome, but Washington will proceed if needed.
