Nice Opera in Europe A Jewel Box Yet Flawed
The Nice opera house, a jewel box dating from 1875 and modernized in 1960, hosts a five month season with good sight lines but weak voices and a small orchestra. The reviewer notes strong acting and color, yet spots tense Italian recitatives replaced by French dialogue and overall performance flaws versus Italian standards. Nice remains a cultural hub on the French Riviera with Italian flavor and a growing population.

Bridge Wisdom: Free Fines and Careful Play
Sheinwold notes players chase value at the table and warns that a “free” finesse costs points. West opens nine spades, dummy’s queen is run, costing South 730 points. East signals clubs to time the run, while South pursues clubs to pressure the ace early in the play.
Declarer play to win 10 tricks in bridge lesson
The article analyzes a bridge hand where signals reveal West knows South holds three clubs, blocking dummy’s access. It concludes the correct play is to preserve dummy’s spade honors and win 10 tricks by a sequence starting with the deuce of spades from dummy, forcing out clubs, then using dummy’s queen as an entry.
