Des Moines reports Auditor Merriam’s figures show delinquent taxes due in 1899 total over 18.6 million dollars for state, county, school, and city taxes. Excludes licenses and net revenues. Per capita cost of governance sits near ten dollars. school taxes rise 150,000, city taxes 425,000, state tax 3.2 mills.
In Winneshiek county district court Charlotte Daubney heir wins judgment against nephews Dr. F W Daubney and brother for 7000 dollars from estate of George Daubney. The decision by Judge Fellows grants Daubney all she sought, amid prior political tension from Dr Daubney’s state senate bid.
Two men died and a third injured when frozen earth tumbled from a Wickham Brothers dirt bank at the Fort Dodge Omah railroad grade. Victims were Joe B. Black of Council Bluffs and F. Kroner of Atchison Kansas. Injured was C. P. Read of Council Bluffs with a broken limb and possible internal injuries. The collapse occurred without warning as frost loosened the bank.
Des Moines report states Adjutant General Byers received word from Adjutant General Hawkins of the regular army that the government will transport all soldiers who died in Manila or Honolulu to their homes at no cost to families. The Iowa department is to provide a complete list of Iowa soldiers who died while serving overseas.
Despondent over consumption and a year and a half old child’s illness, Bohemian saloonkeeper Frank Metela killed the child with two bullets and then shot himself. Metela’s body was found in a seated position, its clothing burned. He left a letter explaining the motive. In Des Moines, Rev W N Coffey Drake University student who stole $600 from his landlady Magart and pleaded guilty to larceny was sentenced to three and a half years in the penitentiary and to pay court costs.
Mrs S Calender of Ackley burned to death while home alone as investigators seek cause. A jail escape attempt in Woodbury County injured a fellow prisoner when a tramp Archie Harris fired from his cell. Fort Dodge bank plot exposed as authorities tighten security. no capture reported. Osborne Deignan named naval cadet for Merrimac sinking bravery. Des Moines bank troubles continue with 42 stockholders seeking a receiver after a 40 percent assessment dispute. Weather service reports severe winter wheat damage across Iowa due to cold and lack of snow. early sown wheat holds up best with spring conditions needed to salvage many acres now totaling about 300000 this year.
An incident at Fort Dople on March 2 reports a valuable horse owned by George Keppner, a railroad contractor, killed after jumping in front of an oncoming engine while driven parallel to the track. The driver escaped injury. In Des Moines the same period, State Oil Inspector Pickle notified the secretary of state about adulterated linseed oil entering Iowa sold as genuine, prompting potential prosecutions.
A house six miles from Onawa Iowa burned killing Joshua Mc Gee's two sons aged 2 and 3 and a baby girl. The mother suffered fatal burns trying to save the children while the father was away. Also notes railroad charter for St Louis Iowa and Northern Railway and Des Moines Auditorium plans to build on vacant lots north of the YMCA with contracts to be signed soon.
The Philadelphia Press reports that republican leaders at Harrisburg offered to bribe democratic legislators to back legislation aiding Senator Quay during his trial for alleged conspiracy to loot the state treasury via the People's Bank. It cites a $1,000 offer to secure a bill reconsideration affecting juror rights.
Washington reports the president has offered Senator Gray of Delaware a new circuit judgeship in the Third circuit covering eastern and western Pennsylvania New Jersey and Delaware. Gray has accepted despite initial reluctance and despite political advice.
London dispatch cites Copenhagen contortion that Emperor Nicholas is prostrated by a serious ailment after the armament manifesto. He is unable to engage in government, which now operates under Grand Duke Michael with decisions made without the czar's cooperation or knowledge.
Mapnip March 4. The queen regent consulted with statesmen and leaders and asked Sagasta to reconstruct the cabinet. Sagasta said a dissolution was needed to stay premier. Montero Rios declined for the same reason. Silvera, conservative leader, accepted the task and will submit a Conservative ministry to the queen for approval.
Dewey and Otis were nominated for high command in the Philippines. The president sent the nominations to the senate, which promptly confirmed them and sent congratulations by cable to both Dewey and Otis.
Premier Sagasta resigns the ministry to the queen as a cabinet crisis unfolds in Spain. The queen must consult leaders over two to three days while the chamber adjourns and a new ministry forms amid ministerialist hopes for Sagast to dissolve the chambers. Senator Chandler reports Ohio bribery charges on Hanna's election. majority finds no foundation, minority calls for further probe.
Iowa patent office reports exclusive right granted to Joe S. Gerem of Des Moines for advertising and distinguishing his Parity Chocolates bonbons. The notice lists several inventions and patent prosecutions including a churn dasher disk with dual action to improve butter and a wheel hub design with oil reservoir. Des Moines March 2.
Washington caucus of House Democrats adopts policy opposing US sovereignty over the Philippines without consent of governed. They pledge to transfer rights to a future independent government on fair terms and commend soldiers and sailors while disapproving current administration movements.
The secretary of war ordered six regiments to reinforce General Otis including the Sixth Infantry, Sixth Artillery, Ninth Infantry, Thirteenth and Twenty-first Infantry, and Sixteenth Infantry. They are to prepare to sail to San Francisco then Manila, with possible relief of volunteers if conditions permit. These troops are seasoned regulars from Cuban and Porto Rico campaigns.
General Otis reports to Alger that insurgents have captured over 1,300 insurgents since February 4 and hold the majority as prisoners of war. He notes three American soldiers captured January near Cavite and Calancan, whom he is seeking and funding. He dismisses illicit reports from Hong Kong and praises troops as in splendid condition.
The U.S. cruiser Detroit arrived from Bluefields Nicaragua with confirmation that the gunboat Marietta and the British cruiser In trepid landed marines. They disarmed native forces, took control of the town, and a civil commission ran the customs house. Hostilities ceased with guarantees that rebels’ lives would be spared. marines re-embarked after peace was restored. The other report from Rome notes Pope’s cyst removal, operation successful, pope recovering.

Testimony shows illness and nausea among Ninth Infantry on the Tampa to Santiago voyage and after reaching Porto Rico, with packers’ reps reaffirming prior testimony and officers offering mixed judgments on quality and safety.
Havana reports 61 typhoid cases in January across the Seventh army corps with 34 in the First division in the Second South Carolina and 37 in the Second division including many in the Forty-ninth Iowa. February saw five typhoid deaths. Malaria totals reach 99 in the First division and 97 in the Second.
