Balliet after a Des Moines visit will return to the Pacific coast where his mining interests remain. He escaped paying the fine and ten thousand dollars in costs from federal court trials. Ex Gov Boies in Good Health Waterloo March 1 Boies arrives from Hot Springs Ark where he has been spending weeks to escape Iowa climate. He returns in good health and endured the long journey well contrary to rumors he has not been sick just slightly indisposed. Reed Gets a Life Sentence Dubuque March 1 James Reed convicted of murdering Officer Norton was sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge Mathes. Father to Fix Blame Cedar Rapids Feb 25 Everett whose son John Everett committed death by own action by shooting seeks to uncover where the boy bought cigarettes and whiskey and to prosecute the guilty parties. Young Everett was found near the river with a bullet hole in his head. The father blames whiskey and cigarettes.
Charles Love William Higgins Myron Welliver and Wilbert Collins fought over timber ownership along the Skunk river near Patterson Station Iowa. Love was wounded while Higgins and others faced severe injuries as deputies recovered two badly wounded men and a cache of weapons. Patrol notes describe the Dark and Floory Ground as a crime-prone area where residents keep rifles for defense.
Davenport court rules that town banks can loan themselves funds without embezzlement charges due to a legislative omission in the statute. M Beuthien is released after pleading guilty to two counts, while Arnold Beuthien faces likely free action on indictments. The ruling centers on self loans by bank officers and the absence of a punishment for that act in Iowa law.
William Van der Wilt, a Sioux County farmer living four miles east of Sioux City, beat his wife to death with a chair last night.
