Washington July 1 The war department reports General Shafter at Siboney says a heavy engagement lasted from 8 a.m. to sundown and that Spanish outer works were carried. three quarters of a mile of open ground remains to the city. Lawton and Bates will join in front of Santiago by nightfall. casualties expected above 460, few killed. At Guantanamo Bay fighting continued with many wounded. one man lost both arms but kept laughing. By evening American forces held the captured outer works and prepared for daybreak fighting. Other reports from Toulouk say Cabana near El Caney taken, Morro Castle bombarded, and the Spanish fleet in the harbor firing on nearby troops.
Washington June 28 The administration plans to send an American squadron to the Spanish coast and into the Mediterranean under Commodore Watson. The force includes flagship Newark battleships Towa and Oregon cruisers Yosemite Yankee and Dixie colliers Scandia Aberends and Alexander. The ships coal at Newport News and Samp son’s fleet awaits a week’s travel to reach the Suez voyage. The squadron is expected toward the Philippines via Camara’s ships near Suez.
Two light artillery batteries have encamped at Camp McKinley. They arrived from Cedar Rapids and Burlington and drill with practice fans from the Rok Island arsenal. The Burlington battery had 101 men and Cedar Rapids 102 upon arrival. enlistments filled the quota. Major Martin is camp adjutant and Adjutant General Byers commands.

The Iowa College of Law reports a prosperous year with a large graduating class and thorough work. A small eight year old boy, son of Frank Stuff of Knoxville, drowned in the Des Moines river during a Sunday school picnic after his hat blew away. In Minden a farmer Henry Thies and his wagon team were killed trying to beat a Chicago flyer at a crossing, a tramp was struck and killed by flying lumber, and a messenger narrowly escaped injury. Des Moines dispatch notes stir over a colored captain dispute and a Congressman Hull backed selection of E. S. Willett to lead a local colored volunteer company.

Spaniards said ships needed repairs and were discharging coal and other materials to repair.
Intercepted dispatches from Admiral Cervera report critical shortages of food and ammunition at Santiago. The fleet has not fired a shot for days despite proximity to harbor batteries. The cruiser New Orleans sails for Key West as Camara’s fleet reportedly passes through the Suez Canal.
