John Marshall Jr. aged 19, son of Crowe and Marshall Coal proprietors, was working in a sinking shaft when dizziness struck. Swedish worker dived after him but collapsed. Fellow Swede John Thunell then attempted rescue, was overcome by fire damp and fell into the water. Both bodies recovered after air was restored. Thunell recently married.
Judge Stevenson, in the equity division, grants the Wallace petition for a receiver of the Pierce Wallace company. The court finds Pierce and Wallace cannot agree on policy or control, and the receiver will oversee affairs and vote the Homestead stock held by the Pierce Wallace company in meetings of Homestead.
Des Moines on June 27 Ira Hubbell a well dressed young man was arrested on complaint by a Atlantic merchant who says Hubbell eloped with his 18 year old daughter Hubbell formerly worked in a Atlantic lumber yard after a brief examination he was released The girl left Atlantic three weeks ago and Hubbell was on the same train they stayed one night with Hubbell’s sister she then went to Marshalltown where she found a stenographer job and was held for her father’s arrival.
Sioux City saloon keepers declare war on restaurant and drug store operators claiming whiskey sales in small quantities harm the retail trade. They demand enforcement of the Martin mulch law through Mayor or take action themselves. Both sides threaten resistance, hinting at a possible clash.
A Dubuque farmer sparked a blaze at the Golden Rule department store when a hip pipe spark ignited a $7,000 fireworks display. The rapid explosions shattered plate glass and sky rockets as townspeople gathered. the farmer vanished amid the chaos.
Drevere, once mayor of Worthington, fled to California amid a fight over a wife two months ago. He is returned in a disturbed condition after two boys were jailed for a minor offense and a saloon fight occurred.
In Monticello a case of attempted murder awaits the next court term. Grant Hollar fired twice, aiming at his wife but missing. the second shot hit his leg. His wife had sworn out a warrant, and he will be moved to Anamosa jail once he leaves his bed.
Lawrence Logs of Clinton was arrested on a charge of having two wives. He has lived in Clinton twelve years with two wives and three children. Last week Minerva Logsdon from Carlinville, Q. caused the arrest. Logs married her twenty one years ago and they had four children. He disputes nothing, saying he was informed of her death before his second marriage. Logs has been regarded as upright and respected in Clinton.
G Haywood and Son bankers and large real estate dealers have made an assignment on June 27. The liabilities are $150,000 with nominal assets of $270,000. Much of the assets consist of real estate, and realization will take years. The two firm members were secretary and treasurer of the Fourth Street Building association, but the members are secured.
Judge Spurrier issues and serves injunctions against all ex-saloon keepers and property owners used for saloons in Des Moines restraining further sale of liquor under the prohibitory law.
A first class law school was organized in Des Moines granting LLB degrees with a full course. At Storm Lake the Iowa bankers conference elected Frank H. Helsell president, J. K R. Deeming vice president, and re-elected secretary treasurer. A letter to the Des Moines Leader suggested silver be bought at market value with redeemable gold certificates.
Rerved Neb June 28. The Barrett Scott murder case closed with the acquittal of Matthan Elliott and Morris, the three vigilantes accused of hanging the Holt county treasurer in January 1895. Scott, who stole 100000, fled to Mexico after extradition and five years in prison. supporters claimed political protection.
Esther Moore and her young daughter were attacked near TAarLLAnAsse Florida while gathering berries. The boar charged, the mother tripped and was fatally injured with tusk wounds, the daughter survived after a neighbor shot the animal. The boar weighed over 200 pounds with tusks over a foot long.
Mrs Lydia Spalding a San Francisco hotel proprietor and widow went insane during a mountain crossing between Glenwood and Leadville. On arrival at Leadville she was placed with the sheriff and relatives were notified. Restored on the journey to Denver she discovered she had been robbed of 3500 in cash a 1000 bill of exchange and 3000 in diamonds. Investigations are underway.
Washington June 23 There will be no more attempts to prosecute 130 members of the American Railway Union in California charged with participating in last July's strike. The attorney general advised San Francisco district attorney to dismiss pending cases citing insufficient evidence. Prosecution cost already spent about 29000 with no convictions secured.
The Press reports that while New York will hold a large portion of the silver, the proposed Chinese loan will likely be floated mainly in Europe, with England the probable hub. A quiet English syndicate has been accumulating silver for months to sell to the loan taker.
A box factory fire in San Francisco on June 28 swept across four blocks before being controlled. The blaze likely caused a loss near 2 million dollars, leaving more than 160 families homeless as numerous houses burned and were destroyed.

W H Turd a wealthy Climbing Hill merchant narrowly escaped lynching after his arrest on an assault charge. A mob of about fifty men seized a rope but halted when alerted by a brother. Turd, his attorney, and a deputy fled by car and were not overtaken over more than a mile.
A Times dispatch from Tien Tsin notes alarming reports of Japanese fortifications on the Liao Tung frontier. Shanghai dispatches quote high officials predicting Russia Japan hostilities over Corea within three months. United States consul at Chefoo reports plague reappearing, with Sanitary measures failing and high mortality anticipated across Chinese ports.
The World reports Cuba will proclaim a republic with delegate elections in New York on July 10. Cuban clubs across the United States will be represented, and delegates will choose a provisional president. Thomas L. Estrada Palma is elected to succeed Jose Marti. Interest bearing bonds will be issued upon proclamation.
In Syracuse New York Pugilist Fitzsimmons stands trial for the murder of sparring partner Don Riordan. Other notes include Harvard Yale and Columbia boat race results with Yale winning New London Conn and Kentucky picks P Watkins Hardin for governor.
In a June riot at the Lixcorx state penitentiary convicts and guards clashed after a tier of cells opened. Convict Scalesi, armed with a self made stiletto, attacked Sullivan and Costello, while guard Dan Athen struck him with a loaded cane. Scalesi sustained head wounds and was hospitalized as order was restored.
In Cleveland the Univere reports the pope’s reiteration that Catholics withdraw from secret societies such as the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. Congressman Foran and other local Catholics in secret orders seek guidance from Mgr. Satolli on enforceability, while Foran admits conscience binds him even as a Catholic.
A second incendiary blaze at the Preside military reservation today gutted the post exchange. Frank Roth, a sutler employee who leased the building, was severely burned and may die. The fire appears aimed at spreading to adjacent officers dwellings. Roth is listed in critical condition.
June 20 report from Chicago details Henry Kraugmann aged 60 burned to death in a barn fire. Michael Redden tried to rescue the sleeping man but suffered near fatal injuries. Redden’s brother David saved him. The barn loft was ablaze with heavy smoke and the damaged building valued around $1000.
In Rabun County Georgia cousins Seymour Keener fatally shot sisters Laura 17 and Lillian 19 Moore after pursuing them on a mountain road. Laura died protecting Lillie who was then shot seven times. Keener claimed the second death was accidental and is jailed at Clayton after local pursuit.
Lussex June 26 Yesterday the Marquis of Salisbury formally accepted the premiership after Lord Roseberys resignation. The new ministry includes Salisbury premier and foreign affairs secretary with the Duke of Devonshire president of the council A J Balfour first lord of the treasury Joseph Chamberlain colonies secretary Michael Hicks Beach chancellor of the exchequer and Joseph Goschen first lord of the admiralty.
Lew A. Conlee deputy sheriff of Lincoln county was found dead near a railroad track at Hutzville. He had seven bullet wounds to head and body and was secretary of the Stock Growers protective association. He had taken a warrant for A. Simes nicknamed Jesse James and was ambushed while taking the prisoner toward the county jail. About 300 citizens from Lincoln and nearby counties scour the area for the killers.
In Campos the government troops defeated the insurgents led by Admiral Da Gama. Overpowered by defeat Da Gama committed suicide. Taveres took command of the rebels after Da Gama's death. Da Gama had been a leading Brazilian naval officer and had shifted from neutrality to support the insurgents two years prior.

United States Senator McKinley has protested to the Colombian government over the imprisonment at Carthagena of two American railroad workers. The Colombian press calls for abrogation of the 1946 treaty with the United States, arguing the McKinley act tariff discriminates against Colombian products under reciprocity. Also noted are miscellaneous local quips and a brief statistic on ballooning accidents in 1894.
A violent cyclone sweeps through Calahan County hitting Baird, the county seat with about 1000 residents. Several homes destroyed and a church falls onto a nearby parsonage, killing a young man named May. Telegraph lines are down and details are scarce.
