Christmas day brought large family gatherings in Vinton with the Edwards, Bender, Morton, and Crawford clans all reuniting at various homes. About fifty at the Edwards home enjoyed an elaborate dinner, while Bender, Morton, and Crawford family members from Cedar Rapids, Shellsburg, Tama City, New Hampton, La Porte City, Chicago, Michigan, Wisconsin, and beyond joined others for a joyous holiday event and festive meals.

Death claims two more citizens in Vinton region
The town of Vinton mourns after six deaths in two weeks. Moses Denman, pioneer tailor born July 3 1881 near Akron Ohio, died December 21 1905 in Winton after strokes. He married Jane Weatherwax in 1855 and left a large family. James Edwin Catlin, born January 30 1841 in Wellsboro Pennsylvania, died December 23 1905 near Vinton at age 64. He served in the 45th Pennsylvania, fought at Fredericksburg and Antietam, married Eliza Mills in 1866, later moved to Iowa and raised ten children. Interments and funeral notices follow.

Death by Own Action Found On Knutz Farm
John Ensign’s body was found Thursday afternoon suspended by a wire noose from a tree on the Knutz farm five miles west of Walker. Authorities say the death was self-inflicted during a period of temporary insanity after he disappeared Tuesday night. Ensign, a recent arrival at the farm, left home twice during Tuesday night and was reported missing until searchers found him in a grove on the property. The scene showed a fence wire wrapped around his neck and tied to a higher limb, with a severed wrist wound. He is survived by a wife and seven children and the community offers sympathy.
