Dedication of United Evangelical Church in Blairstown

A large Blairstown congregation attended the dedication of the United Evangelical Church by Bishop Dobbs. The service featured strong pulpit oratory and a preparatory day of events. Funds totaling about $400 were quickly subscribed to liquidate church debt.

Local Notes From Marengo and Nearby Areas

Threshing nearly finished with oats yielding 25 to 40 bushels per acre. Miss Lillian Hendricks of Ainsworth Nebraska visited en route from the New York Chautauqua assembly. Marengo trip to see sister Mrs Welch. Chas and Nellie Umbarger spent weekend with friends. Norway beat Blairstown 21 to 3. Bell Plaine defeated 16 to 8 last week. Mrs Morgan and others departed for St Louis. Miss Lottie Dee of Brooklyn visited uncle W Wilkins and returned home. Alta Farill of Victor visiting friends. Alice Sargent of Marion called home by her father’s illness. M Humphrey and Aug Schloeman attended the state convention at Marshalltown.

Samuel H. Watson a Pioneer of Vinton Dies at 67

Noted Vinton citizen Samuel H. Watson, a leading banker and promoter of major local enterprises, died August 7 at his home after a long illness. He came to Vinton in 1856, helped found First National Bank, built mills and factories, promoted Cedar Valley Packing, and served 19 years as Trustee and Treasurer of Iowa State College. He supported churches, notably the Presbyterian, and endowed a large organ in memory of his children. He leaves a widow, three sons and a daughter, with funeral services conducted by Rev. Avery and Rev. Phelps.

Notice of partition and lost deed claim in Vinton addition

In the District Court of Town, Renton county, 1895, Daisy Burnett and A C Hooves petition the court to compel a lost deed to lots and block 42 in Tiford’s Second addition to South Vinton. A.C. Reeves is summoned to answer by August 9, 1895. failure leads to default and judgment at the October term at the Court House in Vinton.
