Des Moines health officer Dr Thomas of Red Oak argued before the state board of health that osteopaths cannot treat infectious diseases unless quarantined and cannot sign death certificates. He quarantined a Scarlet fever case and limited burial permits until other doctors sign. The board referred the matter to the attorney general, stating osteopaths may treat infectious diseases on par with other physicians, but noting osteopaths are not physicians and usually cannot enter quarantined premises.
Des Moines men bid through the night to purchase Brassfield Island a 500 acre tract in the Missouri river four miles south of Sioux City at a finalized price netting the state $4,000. State officials and agents conducted the sale, with bids from Sioux City contending against Des Moines competitors. The purchase culminated after intense competition and a late-session round of offers.
Marshalltown April 14 one of the largest deals in Marshall county closed at State Center. J B Metson sells large interests for South Dakota and northwest Town lands. He holds nearly a thousand acres in Beadle county N B and a 296 acre farm near Spirit Lake Iowa. In return he trades his general store and implement business. George S Meig of Osceola S D takes possession of the implement business and Messrs Dwell and Listen take the general store. The amount is about 103000.
Logan hears April term plea as Bennisen and Cochran Exton deny charges. Attorneys Gree n and Egan enter not guilty pleas for receiving and aiding concealment. Petitions filed for change of venue. locals sign to move trial from Harrison County. District court set to hear remand and venue motions as parties seek a fair trial.
In Indianola on April 23, Simpson college suspends most junior and many freshmen after two junior bags raised on the chapel, provoking a faculty stand against class demonstrations. Students vow a walkout and demand reinstatement, arguing the faculty acts unfairly by seeking names of offenders.
Judge Brington set aside indictments for murder and wrecking against Eric Rowleben who confessed to ditching the Rock Island Rocky Mountain Limited at Homestead. The quash was granted due to a seven jury requirement and a special grand jury convened after adjournment. Rowleben remains in custody awaiting grand jury action.
London reports Admiral Rojestvenski’s squadron remains on course to strike the main East Asian route. Vladivostok fortifications grow with 180000 plus garrison, batteries, redoubts, and ammo stores. Singapore notes the Russian fleet’s position off the Malay area, heading northeast, not toward Saison.

St Petersburg April 12 Japanese observers are said to have a squadron in waters off Latuan British Borneo keeping in touch with Russian forces as tensions rise toward a northern clash near Formosa. The admiralty notes Japan may shift coast defenses while Russian ships at Vladivostok stay ready.
United States Senator J. R. Burton of Kansas was re-indicted by a federal grand jury in St. Louis on five counts for allegedly agreeing to accept 2500 from the Rialto Grain & Security Co to look after its interests before the post office in Washington. The charges include a 2500 agreement, a 250 fee, and a 3500 fee. The Supreme Court recently overturned a prior Burton conviction on the same matter for lack of jurisdiction.

A Good Roads Special train will depart Chicago on Wednesday May 3 under the joint plan of the National Good Roads Association and the Burlington and Northern Pacific to advocate primary road improvements. W H Manss oversees Burlington arrangements while the trip spans 45 to 50 major cities across Illinois Missouri Iowa Nebraska Wyoming Montana Washington and Oregon ending with a Pacific Coast convention. Government experts and national authorities will join to educate and organize communities for road upgrades and street payments.
The Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul Railway plans a line from Chamberlain west through Lyman County South Dakota, opening cheap land and rich agricultural resources. With soil praised for top corn prizes and grains, land now sells at 8 to 12 dollars per acre, expected value jumps of 100 to 200 percent after the extension.
