Health officer after osteopaths clash over rights

Des Moines health officer Dr Thomas of Red Oak argued before the state board of health that osteopaths cannot treat infectious diseases unless quarantined and cannot sign death certificates. He quarantined a Scarlet fever case and limited burial permits until other doctors sign. The board referred the matter to the attorney general, stating osteopaths may treat infectious diseases on par with other physicians, but noting osteopaths are not physicians and usually cannot enter quarantined premises.

Brassfield Island Sold to Des Moines Speculators

Des Moines men bid through the night to purchase Brassfield Island a 500 acre tract in the Missouri river four miles south of Sioux City at a finalized price netting the state $4,000. State officials and agents conducted the sale, with bids from Sioux City contending against Des Moines competitors. The purchase culminated after intense competition and a late-session round of offers.

Sig Deal in Land is Made in Marshall County

Marshalltown April 14 one of the largest deals in Marshall county closed at State Center. J B Metson sells large interests for South Dakota and northwest Town lands. He holds nearly a thousand acres in Beadle county N B and a 296 acre farm near Spirit Lake Iowa. In return he trades his general store and implement business. George S Meig of Osceola S D takes possession of the implement business and Messrs Dwell and Listen take the general store. The amount is about 103000.

Burton Indicted Again Over Rialto Fees

United States Senator J. R. Burton of Kansas was re-indicted by a federal grand jury in St. Louis on five counts for allegedly agreeing to accept 2500 from the Rialto Grain & Security Co to look after its interests before the post office in Washington. The charges include a 2500 agreement, a 250 fee, and a 3500 fee. The Supreme Court recently overturned a prior Burton conviction on the same matter for lack of jurisdiction.
