In Iowa this fall the opposition to the republican party, if united, can win a signal victory. There is deep feeling in both the democratic and national parties to accomplish this purpose. Republicans and some unconsulted figures may try to block a united front, but recent campaigns show the likelihood of a strong, united opposition prevailing.
The Washington Letter dated May 7, 1885 reports a plan to reorganize the Democratic party nationwide by creating a Democratic club in every township. It envisions town club presidents forming a county committee to purge non Democrats from civil office and enforce Jeffersonian Democratic principles.
The new Pension Office building nears completion with a 400 by 200 foot four story brick and iron structure. It features an immense courtyard, 12 foot diameter pillars, wide balconies, and room for thousands of visitors. General Meigs is architect.
