A Democratic State Convention will be held at Council Bluffs on Wednesday May 21 1879 to nominate candidates for Governor Lieutenant Governor Judge of the Supreme Court and Superintendent of Public Instruction. Each County gains delegates based on Knapp votes from 1878 with a call to unite against Republican Tule and support economy and fiscal reform.

A National Greenback Convention of Benton County is called to convene at the Court House in Vinton on Sunday May 17 1879 at 1 o clock for selecting seven delegates to enable the Interstate Convention in Des Moines on May 25. The county will send five delegates per township. Townships should meet June 10 to choose delegates.
J C Summers issues a political defense of reconciliation after the Civil War. He rails at Republicans for pensions debates, corruption, and grandstanding finance while urging unity under the flag and a return to limited government. He argues for retrenchment, economy, and voting to end the so called despoilers of prosperity.

The lettered allegations claim better rooms and food for outsiders, abuse by the Principal's family, and dismissal of staff and pupils who tell the truth. It accuses the matron and ten Pennsylvanians of exploiting funds and privileges, demands explanations, and urges reform or replacement by a capable manager. The piece cites scripture and calls for accountability.
