Wistox, Bexrox Co, May 6, 1857. From exchanges we infer the whole Democratic ticket is elected. official returns from 41 counties show a Democratic majority around 1500, with more counties to hear from boosting it to 2500 or 3000. Cedar Rapids reports the Free Bridge to be rebuilt at about 10000 dollars with private pledges covering 7500. City Drug Store advertises Copious stock already arrived after a trip to Exst.
Mr Olmsted becomes sole proprietor of the Young America Store and returns from New York with large stock of dry goods and groceries to offer cheap cash prices. State Reporter and National Crescent are praised as exchanges and Editor Sylvester’s enlarged Iowa City paper is commended for democratic support and local pride.
A Saturday report claims Pawnee Indians collided with whites near their camp. A Militia Major General and Major Dennison, new Pawnee Agent, rushed to the scene at Bellvue. Settlers complain of cattle killings and house break ins by Indians, urging a treaty and removal.
Washington dispatch reports Gen Harney and troops ordered from Florida to Port Leavenworth and Col Sumner with about 1,000 men directed against the Iowa and Cheyenne Indians. The administration aims to restore peace as 3,000 troops prepare to move into Kansas under Harney and General Smith. Dubuque votes to loan 290000 to Dubuque and Turkey River RR and 100000 to Dubuque and Bellville RR.
The New York Independent flags a harsh abolition stance while The New York Express fires back with strong mobilization rhetoric. Reports descend into related editorials from Albany papers and a wave of social and political notes from New York and Philadelphia.
John Mellveen, cashier for J. Becke Co., dry goods dealers at 355 Broadway, charged with embezzling over 130000 dollars over several years. The firm’s books revealed a regular balance that was falsified, with Mellveen confessing and surrendering a house and lot purchased with stolen funds. He was a former Scotch regiment officer and had enjoyed high community standing. The firm anticipates further asset restitution.
