Rally for the Fourth Liberty Loan at High School

A Fourth Liberty Loan rally was held at the High School Thursday evening led by District Chairman A. G. Smith. Speakers included Rev. David Roberts Rev. Wm Brown and students Alva Adams Pierre Getzwiller and Miss Vada Clark. Committees were named for soliciting subscriptions with plans for another open meeting next week.

Benson Boy Receives Army Commission

Lewis B. Maier, son of Mr and Mrs B Maier of Benson, earned a commission as second lieutenant of infantry after ROTC training at the Presidio near San Francisco. He ranked sixth among 149 commissioned from 1000 applicants and will serve as a military instructor at the University of California Berkeley. Maier, who late tried to enlist during World War I, was raised in Benson and is among six Arizona youths to win commissions.

Marriage in Tombstone Shilliam and Hubbard Wed

Miss Mary Ethel Shilliam daughter of the late William Shilliam of Benson and Blaine Thomas Hubbard of Douglas were married in Tombstone yesterday by Rev. Stark of the Congregational church. The bride has been a stenographer in the Warren District schools and is popular. the groom works as an engineer at the Copper Queen smelter in Douglas and is well regarded in the Smelter City.

Benson Red Cross Holds Painting Drive and Camp Perry Report

Ten Red Cross members met with the Benson theater executive committee to organize painting the donated Red Cross building and fund the painter via a subscription. W. J. Bennett tapped to lead the drive as donations and dance proceeds cover supplies. Also, W. T. Robie reports Benson’s Arizona Rifle team at Camp Perry, Ohio, finishing tenth among about sixty teams with medals earned by members.
