The Food Administration aims to provide three pounds of household sugar per month for canning season use and plans to supplement this allotment with additional sugar as needed. It urges saving methods such as canning in natural juices, syrups, drying, and storing produce in pits and cellars.

In the French Alps near Lyons the Chateau des Halles houses 200 sick children under Red Cross care. Mangini built the castle. it later became a hospital after his family’s deaths and ownership passed to Lyons. Evian refugees, many children, arrive malnourished and ill, prompting Red Cross efforts to adapt the neglected château into a hospital.
The Chateau des Halles is described as one of France’s best children’s hospitals, hastily converted for war needs. The two isolation rooms are large and cheerful, with a play room filled with rocking horses and toys carved by wounded soldiers. Bathrooms feature small basins and shower baths to suit children, reflecting Red Cross care for France’s youngsters.

W B Gibson reports a letter from Rev N Levison former pastor of the Presbyterian Church here. He is at Hounslow barracks near London with Canadian troops after sailing from Halifax N S. He hoped for ten days leave and a May wedding to Miss Margaret Nichol of Scotland, and noted he would likely be at the front when the letter arrived in Benson.

Francisco Vega was killed last Sunday when he allegedly resisted arrest by Deputy W J Bennett. Vega and Manuel Martinez were with Alfonso Moreno arrested for disturbing the peace. A struggle ensued as Vega attacked Bennett who fired twice, wounding Vega. Martinez fled. Gray remained jailed. Coroner's jury ruled death a gunshot wound caused by resisting an officer in the line of duty.
