Southern Pacific cuts freight car needs with better loading
Pacific System figures show January traffic across 59 257 cars handling more than 1.5 million tons. Over 11 500 cars released for public use as improved loading reduces demand by about 70 809 cars if last year’s tonnage per commodity had been loaded. Oil tank cars not included.

Government Ask For New Rock For Concrete Ships
The United States government asks Arizona to supply light volcanic rocks for strong yet light concrete ships. The Arizona State Bureau of Mines will collect samples of visicular basalts volcanic tufa ash and scoria near rail lines or trucking routes. Samples should include deposit extent and rail proximity and whether a spur line could be built. In Cochise County the first draft quota of 670 men is nearly filled with eleven sent to Camp Funston including six from the last quota and five transfers. Tombstone’s patriotic girls gave a farewell to drafted men when the train departed at 4 15 pm.
