Fourth of July Big Day in Benson
Benson celebrated the Fourth with a full day of events from rifle range shooting to a city parade and a twenty mile auto race. Tombstone won the range match. Almy took the individual prize. The parade featured Spanish American Society members bearing American and Mexican flags. A large barbecue at the High School grounds followed, with Wm. B. Bush as principal speaker. The 20 mile auto race crowned W. J. Bennett the winner, proceeds to the Red Cross. The Benson-Willcox baseball game tied 5–5 after nine innings. Roping, broncho busting, and horse racing closed the day, Fort Huachuca musicians provided music for the dance at the Auditorium with many couples on the floor. Net proceeds to Red Cross.

Harry C. Wheeler once Cochise County Sheriff who ordered the Bisbee deportations in 1917 has sailed from France to the United States. He holds a U S Army captain’s commission. A Tucson district attorney statement cited no indictment against Wheeler for the deportations.
