The Bensenville Park District proposes Poplar Park at the western boundary to provide a closer play area for children west of Route 83. Plans show a one acre site with a tot area, playground for older kids, shelter, spray pool, sand finished paths, and adult recreation facilities.
St Alexis Catholic School in Ber senville may face a financial bind next year without state aid. The Illinois Senate Education Committee voted 10 6 against a parochial aid bill backed by Gov Ogilvie. The bill would have appropriated 29 million for secular services by public instruction from non public schools with caps of 60 per elementary pupil and 90 per high school student.
Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison earned a very favorable accreditation report after a February site review by four educators. The four-year-old school expects an August or September accreditation letter from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and plans to address recommendations including adding a guidance counselor expanding library facilities and revising the physical education and fine arts programs.
Bensenville Elementary School District 2 offers a four week summer program from June 29 to July 24. Registration for kindergarten through fifth grade runs Wednesdays through May 29 in Tioga School principal office 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Sixth to eighth graders register at Blackhawk Junior High School 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. for the rest of the month. Non residents pay higher fees. Head Start for non English speaking children is included supervised by Sue Nejdlik.
Up to date plans for the proposed Rte 83 improvements from Memorial to Thorndale may be revealed at the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday night. Robert Murtyn of the state bureau of planning will discuss The State Highways System in the Vicinity of Bensenville. A public hearing on Rte 83 was held two weeks earlier with residents proposing pedestrian overpasses. The meeting at Ellens Green Tree Restaurant 800 W Irving Park Rd opens social hour at 6 30 and dinner at 7 with reservations due by Monday.
The Strohm family of Bensenville donated their one year old German Shepherd Brandy to Leader Dogs for the Blind in Michigan after their daughter became allergic. Brandy completed the six month training program and James Thorne of Indiana now enjoys travel independence with the dog.
