Padock Publications staff writer Judy Covelli begins a two part series on suburban forest preserves. The piece explores what they offer to hikers picnickers and the risks from night vandals. It appears today on Page 4.
A six-member Du Page Mayors and Managers steering committee unanimously accepted an eight-plant countywide sewage system proposed by the Northeast Illinois Plan Commission. The plan, backed by county and municipal leaders, awaits full Mayors and Managers approval on August 23.
Roselle Addison Bloomingdale and Glen Ellyn Heights oppose the county one plant plan. With the eight plant system under study and the failed local authority, the four villages weigh a countywide approach amid potential referendum challenges. Nottke seeks NIPC funds deterring new plants and asks the Illinois Sanitary Water Board to slow interim facilities.
The Bensenville Park Board weighs annexing White Pines Golf Course while Fischer's Woods status remains unclear. Wayne Scheppele, head of the Committee for the, expresses approval of the land purchase by the forest preserve.
Neely Drilling spokesman Cliff L Neely says a complete report on the damaged pump from Bloomingdale’s broken well will be ready today. Reda Pump Co of Bartlesville Okla is testing whether to replace or repair the pump at no cost to the village if no misuse is found. The August 14 extraction followed July 3 breakdown. Wells one and three serve the area.
Robert B. Mackey, 19, of Roselle, died after his car collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Robert Feekes, 20, of Chicago, on Route 53 near Nordic Road. Feekes was hospitalized with head injuries. police did not file charges. Mackey, a Lake Park High School and St Procopius student, hockey goalie, is survived by parents and three sisters.
And Not Forgotten with the DaPe Area Girl Scout Council will sponsor a camp for children 10 and older from August 17 to 23 at Camp Greenwood in Lisle. The welfare group, Girl Scouts, counselors, a nurse and cook will run the program. details are at the association office 100 S York St Elmhurst or 834 7800.
