Fifth birthday in sterile isolation for immune-deficient boy
David, an immune-deficient child in Texas Children’s Hospital, has lived in a germ free plexiglass habitat since birth. He celebrated his fifth birthday on September 21 and may soon wear a miniature space suit to venture briefly outside his sterile environment. Doctors and engineers from Johnson Space Center plan to enable limited outside exposure while preserving sterility.

Test finds newspaper index befuddles teens
A nationwide reading skills test shows 60 percent of 13 year olds and 41 percent of 17 year olds answered the newspaper index question correctly. Nine year olds fared best, while reading intervention aided their gains. The study, conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, notes ongoing concerns about declining overall reading abilities and links to college entrance test scores.
