Major Allied counteroffensive opens near Saigon border

Tens of thousands of American and South Vietnamese troops enter the Cambodian border area northwest of Saigon in a major counteroffensive against three North Vietnamese divisions. Nixon signs draft bill but delays pay raise to November

President Nixon signed a bill extending conscription to mid-1973 and authorizing a 2.4 billion pay hike for servicemen, the largest in history, but he delayed the raise beyond Friday until the 90 day wage price freeze ends in mid November. White House and Justice Department opinions supported delaying the boost. Rep. Hebert hinted he would not oppose the decision, while Ford urged patience as calls under the new authority are expected soon.

Senate confirms Habib as envoy to South Korea

Westphal to seek Republican nomination for Congress

Vermont Republican Sen. Fred Westphal confirmed plans to seek his party’s congressional nomination, joining four others in the race. The field includes Attorney General James M. How bad is school overcrowding

In Bennington area Mt Anthony junior and senior high schools face overcrowding with current enrollments of 1 356 against capacities of 500 600 and 900 1 000. Junior high shows large study halls and few outdoor facilities while senior high crowds core facilities. Proposals include rescheduling to expand shop time for non academics and more time for academically inclined students and concern grows about future class sizes around 400.

Thieu orders police to shoot firebombers in Saigon

President Thieu ordered police to shoot on the spot any demonstrators caught firebombing or damaging property. He met with 400 police chiefs to launch a crackdown on supporters and opponents during the presidential election. Gen Minh accused Thieu of rigging the vote and warned of a loss of legitimacy if the election proceeds.
