Vermont labor council weighs endorsements in Vermont race
Burlington UPI report says the Vermont Labor Council opened its annual convention with debates over endorsing Sen. Robert Stafford or Gov. Thomas Salmon, both praised for labor records, and whether to back Stella Hackel in the gubernatorial race against Richard Snelling. AFL CIO lobbyist James Finneran stirred the crowd by backing Snelling, prompting a council clarification.

Regional oil unit proposed in New England plan
U.S. Representative Michael J. Harrington urged a regional council to approve or reject all proposed oil refineries and energy facilities in New England, likening it to the Tennessee Valley Authority. If not feasible, he proposed a compact among New England states to share offshore oil revenues and regulation. At an offshore oil conference he cited 12 refinery site proposals in three years, warning that uncoordinated development could overwhelm regional oil needs.

Vermont primary muddle sparks crossovers and party shifts
In Vermont a political mishmash unfolds as Democrats vote for Republican Snelling and Republicans back Democrat Hackel in a sign of crossovers. Analysts suggest up to 7,000 Republicans may have crossed lines to aid Hackel while Snelling builds broader support with a Bipartisan Vermonters effort. Independent Vermonters and a LibertUnion presence add to the ballot dynamic.

Half a century at Lye Brook wilderness tale
In 1914 Rich Lumber Company began clear cutting around Richville climbing to Stratton Mountain. Steam mills fed by logs from Lye Brook cut millions of board feet yearly until 1919 when a fire destroyed the sawmill and 300 workers lost their jobs. By 1975 the area was designated Vermont wilderness, protected from logging, with Daley Rizio recalling the old days and the company’s migration from Wanakena to Manchester.
