Small New York telephone firms shrink after mergers
In New York State small independents face capital shortages and rising merger activity. The Taconic Telephone Corp formed by Copake and Columbia and Rensselaer Telephone Co. now serves 41,000 people over 800 square miles, with 5 million in plant assets and 1.9 million in gross revenue for 1971. Regulators warn such deals may raise rates and challenge public interest, even as they enable needed improvements.
