Maple decline flags stress on maples in September
UVM County Extension Agent explains maple decline as a condition caused by multiple stress factors. Crowding, altered drainage, root disturbance, road salt, heat from pavement, and changing soil conditions weaken older maples and hasten decline, especially along streets and near walls. trees may recover if stressed conditions are corrected, but many eventually die unless conditions improve.
Okay to feed flooded corn
Dr. Jim Wadsworth of AVM Extension says flooded corn is not a health hazard if there is no mold or mildew. About 1,000 acres flooded in Rutland County with possible similar issues in Bennington County. Palatability may be a problem. harvest steps include raising the corn head, leaving one foot standing, and inspecting for mold. Ash content under 10 percent in silted corn should digest normally.
