Vermont committee studies new departments plan at state level
Budget director John T. Gray says the Committee on Administrative Coordination will study creating a department of business and commerce. A 1969 Legislature will be needed for proposals. The plan may consolidate Banking and Insurance, Public Service Board, Industrial Development, and parts of Labor and Industry. Subcommittees weigh consolidating Motor Vehicles and Public Safety and establishing natural resources, human resources, and archives and libraries. At St Michael's College, Rev. Gerald DuPont argues liberal arts must educate beyond tech and resist techno-scientific trend citing love as guide amid concerns about bombs and politics.

Gov. Philip H Hoff met privately with natural resource advocates in Montpelier to discuss water pollution issues. Attendees included the Water Resources Board the Natural Resources Council League of Women Voters and the Federated Sportsmen Club of Vermont. Key topics were the Connecticut River classification and the Barre granite pollution problem. About 52 percent of granite sheds indicated willingness to meet anti pollution standards though some hesitancy remains. Officials sought a clearer river classification amid New Hampshire and Massachusetts criticism of the proposed mix of water types. Attorney General James Oakes urged Hoff to issue a uniform statewide river classification after surveying agency opinions.
