Hurricane Gladys moves north along the Atlantic coast prompting gale warnings from Block Island Rhode Island to Provincetown Massachusetts. The storm's location and path prompted authorities to alert mariners and coastal residents as ships and beaches brace for high winds and rough seas.
Democratic congressional leaders seek guidance from President Johnson on reapportionment. Sen. Douglas says Johnson should intervene to build support for a compromise or defeat rigid proposals. Separate storm and coastal weather updates note a Center Cape Hatteras storm moving north, with high winds and surf.
Richard Porter a 46 year old Navy veteran from White River Junction Vermont lived 30 days in the Allagash wilderness to test his 64 pocket canvas survival jacket weighing 19 pounds. He ate dehydrated food carried on shore of Round Pond and lost from 159 to 114 pounds. He spoke of loneliness and dreary weeks and was picked up by plane with wife Muriel. The Porters are Fort Kent natives.
