Paul VI and Vatican Senate Signal Shifts in Church Reform
Pope Paul VI opened the Vatican council’s final session by creating a Senate of bishops elected from national hierarchies to advise him on universal church decisions. The move tests collegiality, may dilute curial power, and could mark a shift toward greater democracy, pleasing progressives yet uncertain in execution. Meanwhile, Jewish and Protestant leaders prepare a nation-wide vigil in Lafayette Park to protest Russia’s treatment of Jews, while church relief efforts aim to aid Vietnam with mercy and reconciliation missions led by Dr. W Harold Row.
