Trial date set for Mitchell and Stans in Watergate case
United States District Court in New York reset the perjury conspiracy trial of former Cabinet members John Mitchell and Maurice Stans for October 23. Judge Lee Gagliardi warned of possible further delays as defense cited extensive Watergate publicity and requests for a fair trial. The 16 count indictment alleges attempts to influence an SEC probe into Robert Vesco and lying to a grand jury. The defendants resigned from cabinet roles to support Nixon’s 1972 re election bid and seek an earlier trial to let publicity fade.
