U S reassures NATO allies over Czech invasion
The United States uses diplomacy and military postures to reassure allies, especially Germany, after the Soviet bloc invasion of Czechoslovakia. The State Department warned of an immediate allied response to any invasion of West Germany under NATO. The Pentagon floated moving up about 12 000 combat troops and airmen to Europe for next year’s NATO maneuvers amid Bonn’s fears of Soviet intervention. The timing and rationale remain unofficial. In Bonn, officials warned President Johnson of possible Soviet interference in Eastern Europe and cited a warning to stop interference. President Johnson, in two foreign policy speeches, urged Moscow to reduce tension and stated force would not be tolerated in Berlin. Also, Burlington reports 118 million voting-age civilians in the U S for the November election, a five per cent rise since 1964, with New England leading turnout at 72 percent.
