A town Democratic caucus is set for Wednesday at 8 in Bennington County Court House. An accident on VT 30 near Bal Jerich in East Manchester left Mrs John P Shebell of Burlington hospitalized with possible internal injuries and a bump on the head after her car hit Janet Lally of East Hampton Massachusetts. Lally uninjured. Shebell condition improving.

Northfield School welcomes Pauline Asper to sophomore class

Pauline R. Asper, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bjarne Asper, is among the 625 girls registered for the 89th academic year at Northfield School, entering the sophomore class.

Hoosick Falls Hero Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross

Captain Lewis C. Watt of Hoosick Falls has earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for outstanding service in Vietnam as a pilot with Sub Unit I Marine Aircraft Group 16. The citation praises superior aeronautical ability and devotion to duty earned during multiple operations including Hastings and Prairie series. Watt, a Tufts graduate, is married to Polly Armstrong. He joined the Marines in 1962 and was promoted to captain in 1966.

Local church drive nears goal for education building

A Manchester progress report shows 75 percent of the 175000 target raised for a Christian education building. Specifications are sent to bidders, with ground to be broken near Con Thien soon. Captain Watt earned praise for pinpoint landings to deliver 4000 pounds of supplies under mortar fire, supporting Marines through the night. He later flew additional sorties, unloading cargo under enemy fire before resupply.

Zoning Talk Planned in Manchester

A Manchester zoning meeting is set for Tuesday at 8 PM at the American Legion Hall in Manchester Depot. Wallace Farnum of the state Central Planning Office will discuss The Facts of Zoning, with backing from the Greater Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce and its zoning committee. The chamber seeks two representatives from each local organization to form a steering committee representing Manchester groups.

BBS To Host UVM Course in Education Evening Division

Registration Wednesday at Burr and Burton Seminary for a University of Vermont Evening Division course in education. The 7 p.m. session leads to a first class on Personality Development and Mental Hygiene taught Wednesdays. UVM Evening Division offers 58 Burlington courses and off campus classes in 10 Vermont towns and in Montreal this fall.

Hoosick Falls resident James Cusack Jr. 11 remains under observation at Putnam Memorial Hospital. Duncan McMartin was admitted after illness. Mrs. Ida Lovell, formerly of Hoosick Falls, visited Eva Shaw on River Street. Hoosick Falls Central School remains closed as faculty attend a workshop.

Pownal Caucus and Church Board Meet Tonight

The Pownal Democratic Party caucus convenes Wednesday at 7 30 PM in Town Hall to elect a town committee officers and three County Democratic committee members with business to discuss. The North Pownal Congregational Church board meets at 7 PM at the parsonage to set next year’s budget.

Pine Cobble School elected new Student Council members and officers at the first all-school assembly. Brad Davis was named president, Phil Adams vice president, and Diane deNailly secretary treasurer, with grade level representatives named for grades 6 7 and 8. A slide talk on a Greece trip highlighted the assembly. Bookmobile schedule shows Sept 19 in Bennington County and Sept 21 in Rutland County with times.
