First U S sub battles British flagship in 1776
The Turtle, a seven foot oaken egg shaped sub with a conning tower and hand cranked propellers, attempted to sink HMS Eagle in New York Harbor in 1776. David Bushnell designed it in Connecticut with a depth gauge and phosphorescent illumination while Ezra Lee manned the craft and attempted to attach a timed explosive to the hull. The copper sheathing protected the ship and the mission failed.
