Booze Taxes Grow Higher Across July Sales
Liquor sales rose 5 percent in July, lifting state tax revenue 23 percent. Liquor Control Commissioner Roger J. Sheridan reported $2.5 million in July business, $122,000 above July 1968 and $654,000 more than June, totaling $857,000 in revenue. He linked gains to tax hikes of 50 cents per gallon on liquor and 5 cents on malt beverages, noting stronger overall sales and a summer brewery strike did not curb demand as consumers switched brands.
