The United Auto Workers set a 10 a.m. Friday strike deadline for Ford Motor Co after reviewing negotiations. UAW President Walter P. Reuther cited wage inequities and production standards as sticking points, saying crisis pressure is needed to resolve them.
Western diplomats and UPI reports scrutinize Khrushchev's claim of a doomsday weapon capable of exterminating humanity. Analysts note no U.S. proof of such a weapon and suggest intimidation toward China, while contrasting Soviet and American views on strategic arsenals from 1954 to today.
Rep. William E. Miller charged that Democrats broke farm promises from the 1960 campaign during a Des Moines farm policy speech. He attacked Johnson and Humphrey, cited ADA ties, and accused Johnson of racist land sale covenants in Texas. Miller spoke in Kearney and Topeka as part of a broader Midwest tour.
In Tuskegee two Black candidates backed by the Negro Tuskegee Civic Association defeated white incumbents for city council seats. Dr. Stanley Hugh Smith won 949 to 704 over James L. Braswell, and Rev. K L Buford took the second seat 918 to 732 over Dr. T Riley Lumpkin. Mayor C M Keever defeated incumbent Howard Rutherford 943 to 732.

Bennington selectmen agreed to send a letter to the airport commission clarifying responsibilities and meeting frequency. They will seek regular monthly meetings, commission recommendations, and follow up on approved projects while retaining final control of expenditures.
Sen J Strom Thurmond of South Carolina defects to the Republican party saying Democrats drift toward socialism and minority influence. He plans a 6 15 p m EST television address to South Carolinians to explain his switch and hopes it won’t hurt him politically.
Barry Goldwater charged President Johnson tried to manage Cuban coverage by deleting Cuba related lines from a Miami speech. He argued Johnson hides Cuba's threat while attacking domestic foes and praised states' rights during a campaign swing through Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina.
Washington reports President Johnson faced defeat as his health care bill for the aged lost momentum in the House. Supporters suspended efforts this week, sending the Senate bill to a conference with likely burial despite hopeful comments from some backers.
The last major rebel commander of the attempted anti-government coup, Col. Rayah Van Ton of the 7th Division, surrendered at My Tho and was flown to Saigon by U S Army helicopter. Ton’s surrender ends the abortive uprising and aligns nationwide military units behind Khanh.
Richard A. Snelling challenged Governor Philip Hoff to debate labor records in Newport. Hoff refused, saying he is not running for lieutenant governor. Snelling urged a public discussion while Hoff criticized Snelling for backing right to work.
