Vermont Industry Outlook Sees Bleak Path Ahead

State planners heard a bleak forecast for Vermont industry as manufacturing jobs shrink and taxes deter new investment. David Kirker of the Vermont Economic Development Division urged tax stabilization and warned regulations raise costs. He noted most Vermont manufacturers are small firms with thin margins and that education supports existing industry rather than attracting new firms. He said Act 250 won’t drive away prospects and that Vermont has spent millions on pollution abatement while local communities must partner with state offices to attract employers.
