Vermont bill seeks scenic highway corridors statewide
The House Natural Resources Committee backed a bill to create scenic corridors along major Vermont highways. Attorney General James Oakes said the measure appears constitutional but warned a test case could be filed if approved next year. The plan bans amusement parks, stands, bowling alleys, service stations, billboards, and disorderly ridge-top development within 1,500 feet of rights of way. Major corridors include Route 100 from near North Troy to the Massachusetts line, Route 30 from Middlebury to Brattleboro, and Route 9 from Bennington to Brattleboro, with ten additional corridors proposed.
